3 Ways to Remove Pet Urine Smell from Carpets

Many people consider their pets to be one of the biggest blessings in their lives.

In Canada, more than 70% of all households have at least one pet. As much as pets can be therapeutic to have around, looking after them can be a chore in itself. You have to take care of many aspects daily — potty training being a critical one. Be it a little tabby cat or a large German Shepherd dog, you’ve likely had your pet mistake a carpet for a litter tray at some point. Here are some steps you can take when this happens before hiring professional carpet cleaning services.

1. Immediate Response

If you are lucky, your pet might urinate on a carpet while you are still around to take immediate action. The first thing you should do is blot the area with a sufficient amount of paper towels. Wait for them to soak up as much urine as possible, and then discard them. Once the spot is no longer soaking wet, apply water or other cleaning solvents to the area. Rinse the water out as many times as you deem necessary.

After this, you will likely be left with an unpleasant odour. You can use odour remover products that are available in the local market or use household ingredients like baking soda. Spreading baking soda over the affected area and letting it soak overnight can get rid of the smell in most cases. You can vacuum it to clean the area.

2. Dealing with Dried Urine

What happens if your pet urinates on a carpet in your absence? You will likely come home to dried urine, which can be trickier to get rid of. You can directly rinse the area with water to remove the dried urine. The stain will likely leave after a few cycles of wetting and blotting, but the odour might remain. You can use home remedies like vinegar solutions and baking soda to get rid of the smell.

3. Reach Out to Professionals

Even if you completely wash out the urine stains and remove the smell, there can still be a significant amount of bacteria trapped within your carpet’s fibres. That is why it is wise to get professional carpet cleaning services semi-regularly. You can contact trusted carpet and area rug cleaning in your area and discuss your case.

  • This design is wicked! You certainly know how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Excellent job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

  • It was interesting to me when you mentioned that dried pet urine will be removed after cycles of wetting and blotting. I would think that some strong cleaning chemicals would be able to remove the smell of urine for good. It seems like it would be a good idea to hire a cleaning service if you have old pet urine that needs to be dealt with.
