Wine Stains on Carpet

Wine stains – it happens to the best of us.  Whether it is a glass of wine carelessly spilled over during an enthusiastic conversation or a bottle of wine accidentally getting knocked over during a dinner party, it can happen to anyone.  Red wine stains, in particular, need to be treated immediately to contain any permanent staining.

We recommend that you follow the important first step below, then contact a professional carpet cleaning company to remove any leftover staining.

1.      Important First Step:

Before you reach for carpet cleaning chemicals, grab a white towel or cloth and start blotting the stain.  It is important to use a clean area of the cloth each time you blot down to absorb as much of the spilled wine as you possibly can from the carpet. Make sure to blot the stain in an up and down motion and not rub it.  After you’ve absorbed as much liquid as you can, pour some clean, cold water on the stain and continue blotting it. Keep adding water and blotting until the stain is gone.  It is important to soak up as much of the liquid as possible and to not leave the stained area soaking wet.  Excess water can also have harmful effects to your carpet including mould growth and potential separation of the carpet backing.

2.      Carpet Cleaning Chemicals:

There are multiple carpet cleaning stain treatments on the market.  All chemicals are not suitable for every carpet and every stain.  There is no such thing as one chemical to treat all stains.  Some may even set the stain permanently or can cause discolouration in your carpet.  When using these products it is important to test them first on a small hidden part of the carpet to make sure the carpet’s color does not run or fade.

3.      Home Remedies:

There are hundreds of home remedies online for stain treatments.  Just like over the counter chemicals, not all home remedies are suitable for your carpet and area rugs. If you use store bought chemicals or home remedies you run the risk of permanently setting the stain or dying the carpet.

4.      Call in the Professionals

If the stain is still visible after multiple blotting attempts we recommend you keep the area wet (to avoid the stain setting) and call in the experts.  Professional carpet cleaning companies are equipped with the proper chemicals and expertise to treat all stains.  Always check the manufacturer’s instructions and make sure you consult a carpet cleaning or upholstery cleaning professional – it’ll be worth it in the long run.
