Remove Pet Urine Smell from Carpet

Whether it’s your brand new puppy or your seasoned best friend when you have a pet, accidents happen. That’s why we have created this article, on how to remove pet urine smell from carpet.

1. Tackling Urine Stains Immediately

Accidents happen to every pet. Follow these steps to treat a recent still-wet pet urine stain on your carpet.

Blot the area with a layer of paper towel. Soak up as much urine as possible, and repeat until the paper towel no longer soaks up any liquid. Once the spot is no longer soaking wet, apply a mixture of water, white vinegar, baking soda, or an enzymatic cleaner. Spray the solution on the spot, and let this solution sit for 5 minutes. Blot the stain with a clean paper towel until no more liquid is soaked. For large spots, repeat this process with the cleaning solution multiple times, and do a final rinse with water soaking up as much liquid as possible and allow to air dry.

If a lingering odor persists, apply store-bought odor removal products or spread baking soda over the affected area and let it soak overnight. Vacuum up the baking powder to clean the area.

2. Dealing with Dried Urine

If an accident happens when you are not home, or you don’t notice the spot immediately and the pet’s urine dries. Tackle the spot with these steps.

Spray the spot with water, and use a few layered pieces of paper towel to blot the stain. Remove as much liquid as possible. Repeat this process until the paper towel is no longer yellow.  If the odor remains after most of the urine has been soaked up use a mixture of water, white vinegar, and baking soda, or a store-bought enzymatic cleaner. Spray the solution on the spot. For homemade solutions allow it to sit for up to 15 minutes to absorb any remaining urine, and blot the spot with a paper towel to remove all excess liquid. For store-bought cleaners follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

3. For Tough Urine Stains Call the Profesionals

Permanently removing urine stains and smells can be difficult. Liquids often penetrate deep into the carpet fibers, and under padding and it can be almost impossible to get rid of lingering smells.

Professional carpet cleaning uses sustainable high-temperature heat at high pressure to lift dirt, dust, and other contaminants from carpeted areas. This method removes up to 94% of common household allergens and safely removes dirt, spots, and odors without leaving any harmful residue.

With additional treatment options such as stain treatments, sanitizing, deodorizing, and odor control/enzyme treatments. Professional carpet cleaning is often your best bet for tackling deep, lingering odors and stains.

  • It was interesting to me when you mentioned that dried pet urine will be removed after cycles of wetting and blotting. I would think that some strong cleaning chemicals would be able to remove the smell of urine for good. It seems like it would be a good idea to hire a cleaning service if you have old pet urine that needs to be dealt with.
