Windows are so much more than glass and frames. They significantly improve our emotional well-being, provide physical benefits, and are an important part of your home’s aesthetic. They connect us to nature, provide air circulation, and provide a clear view of the outside. But they are constantly exposed to dirt, dust, and debris buildup. In this post, we’ll share 10 valuable window cleaning tips that will make your window panes sparkle, and give you a crystal clear view.
Tip #1 - Use the Right Equipment
Ensure you have the tools you will need to clean your windows effectively and avoid having to do it again.
Window cleaning essentials:
- Microfiber cloths
- A homemade or mild window cleaning solution
- Cotton swabs or a soft toothbrush
Tip #2 - Weather and Timing Are Important
Clean your windows on a cloudy day or in the early morning or late evening when the sun is not shining directly on them. Direct sunlight can cause cleaning solutions to dry too quickly and lead to streaks.
Tip #3 - Always Dust First
Use a duster or soft brush to remove loose dirt, dust, and cobwebs from the window’s surface and frames.
Trying to wash away all the dirt and dust immediately with water actually makes the cleaning job a lot more challenging.
Tip #4 - Properly Use The Squeegee
After spraying on the cleaning solution, start from the top and pull the squeegee downwards. Always wipe the squeegee blade after each wipe.
Tip #5 - Tackle Hard-To-Reach Spots
Use a cotton swab or soft toothbrush dipped in the cleaning solution for hard-to-reach areas like corners, and edges.
Tip #6 - easily Remove stickers
Use a hairdryer on a low setting to warm the sticker adhesive, to make it easier to remove from the window. Scrape off the sticker with a scraper or an old credit card. If residue remains spray on a cleaning solution or rubbing alcohol and wipe the area until it’s removed.
Tip #7 - remove Stubborn Stains
For tough, stuck-on stains like bird poop, weather deposits, or water stains. Apply a paste of baking soda mixed with water.
Tip #8 - Don't Forget The Window Screens
To quickly clean the screens carefully use a lint roller to remove dust and debris.
For a thorough clean, remove the screen from the window and fill your bathtub with warm water and a small amount of all-purpose cleaner. Place the screen in your bathtub, and wipe gently with a cloth or let soak for 5-10min. Drain the tub and rinse the screens with warm water. Let air dry before reinstalling. (Alternatively, this can also be done outside with a hose and a bucket of warm soapy water.)
Tip #9 - After Cleaning, Rinse
After cleaning the windows, rinse them with fresh water to get rid of any cleaner residue.
Hard water can leave behind mineral residues. If available, soft water or distilled water is the best water for cleaning windows because they won’t scratch the glass and leave them sparkling clear.
Tip #10 - Polish With A Microfiber Cloth
Finish cleaning your windows by drying them with a clean microfiber cloth. To make the glass sparkle, ensure a streak-free finish and a crystal-clear view.
